He was admitted to AIIMS in New Delhi on April 26 after his health deteriorated. In 2015, he was arrested from Indonesia and was lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi. On 26 April, Tihar Jail officials had told the Sessions Court that Chhota Rajan could not be produced before a judge for hearing as he has been found to be COVID-19 positive. At least 70 criminal cases are registered against the gangster in Mumbai.
